April is National Car Care Aware Month -- A Good Time to Take Control of Your Gas Expenses
April is Car Care Aware the time of year to focus on taking better care of your second largest investment. Especially now, with record high gas prices, regular maintenance is even more important as it can increase gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, according to the Car Care Aware Council.
"Consumers cannot control the price of gas at the pumps, but they can control the amount of gas they use," said Rich White, executive director, C/C Council. "The condition of tires, air filters and spark plugs can impact fuel economy and these components can be easily checked on a regular basis."
During April, many auto repair shops throughout the country celebrate National C/C Month by offering special discounts on parts and service, handing out free C/C Guides and hosting vehicle check-up events in the community. These free vehicle check-up events emphasize the importance of preventive maintenance and educate comsumers about how to take proper steps to prevent problems with their vehicles.
In 2007, vehicle inspections showed that 8 out of 10 vehicles failed at least one component, 14% had low tire pressure, 24% had worn tire tread and were in need of replacement, 24% had dirty air filters, 12% had the "check engine" light on and 27% were low on fluids (engine oil, transmission fluid, engine coolant, etc.)
